Eric Hutton at Mic in Hand in Sydney's Glebe

In Jokey Joke Time, Eric Hutton asks which is worse/better? Comedy that is so obscure, pretentious and personal that it forgets its audience is human beings? Or comedy that is so unintelligently stupid that it treats its audience like garbage brained children? At this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Eric will reach all comedic extremes, and fill the gaps with nourishing, Australian relatableness.

All comedic extremes? Explain how.

The show begins with obscure topics rarely covered in comedy (Wagner), moves to more relatable and middle-of-the-road themes (things you hear walking down the street), and finally descends into childishness (bodily functions), and is directed by every well-known comedian…

Sounds nourishing… what can I expect?

You’ll witness a viscous mix of lateral and deadpan stand-up, freestyle rap, live music and a screen-show of 50 original artworks, performed in one of the most impressive rooms in the city: the Old Magistrates’ Court in the Old Melbourne Gaol where Ned Kelly was sentenced to death in 1880. Artist Jon Kenner’s drawings for Jokey Joke Time are set to live original music composed by Eric, and performed by DJ Enthusiasm a.k.a Jennifer Wong (Good News Week, Home Grown Humour).

Jon Kenner is an artist and musician from Sydney and currently living in Berlin. He’s created 50 amazing drawings for Jokey Joke Time based on Eric’s stand-up, in a collaboration that evolved naturally from their previous working relationships as friends, housemates, and half of the Sydney band The Bzillionaires.

Here’s a video with some of Jon’s images for the show, with Eric’s music.

Jokey Joke Time is the first comedy show ever performed in the Old Magistrates’ Court (at the Old Melbourne Gaol), and DJ Enthusiasm is one of the only DJs in the world to play exclusively in the witness stand. DJ Enthusiasm a.k.a Jennifer Wong (Good News Week, Home Grown Humour) plays the computer and the accordion. When she’s not spinning tunes and working the Jokey Joke Time slideshow from the witness stand, she thinks up limited-use puns such as “Wit-ness Projection Program”, and writes and draws cartoons.
